Feeding plan by water temperature
Koi are cold-blooded. Their metabolism and digestion follow the water temperature, so the right amount and the right food change through the year.
Why water temperature decides
Below about 10 °C koi digest slowly. Protein-rich growth food stays in the gut for a long time and puts strain on the fish and on the filter. Light wheat germ and winter food is easier to digest. From around 18 °C koi use protein efficiently. This is the time for growth and colour food.
Leftover food ends up in the filter as ammonia and nitrite. Feeding to the temperature protects your koi and keeps the water stable.

Feed amount calculator
How many grams per day? Enter number and size of your koi. The temperature is taken over from the advisor above and can be changed.
Weight estimate: weight (g) ≈ 1.7 × length (cm)³ ÷ 100 – e.g. 15 cm ≈ 57 g, 40 cm ≈ 1,090 g, 70 cm ≈ 5,830 g. Young koi under 25 cm get about twice the amount from 14 °C, koi of 25–40 cm about 40 % more. Check with the five-minute rule: everything should be eaten within five minutes. Leftovers mean less next time.
